What’s the Best Chip Flavor? Rank 23 Classics and Wild Cards

I've had that argument with friends, family and my own cravings for years. And lately it feels like everyone is having it. Chip flavor ranking videos keep going viral, brands keep dropping limited-time flavors (this summer's Pringles Hawaiian Barbecue and BBQ Ribs started a whole new round of debates), and Lay's has been rolling out globally inspired flavors that push chip-aisle taste way past plain salt. Sweet-and-spicy "swicy" combos are everywhere, and every group chat seems to have a loud Prawn Cocktail hater.

So I did what any slightly obsessed snack fan would do: I lined up 23 chip flavors and ranked them from S to D tier. Then I built a tier list template so you can do the same.

Quick note before we start: this is my personal taste. If you disagree, good. Open the template, build your version, and tell me where I got it wrong.

The Big Picture: My Chip Flavor Tier List

Here's the whole ranking at a glance. Details and reasons come right after.

  • S Tier: Classic Salted, Salt & Vinegar, Sour Cream & Onion, Cheddar & Sour Cream |
  • A Tier: Barbecue, Cheese & Onion, Salted Egg Yolk, Honey Butter, Wasabi, Chili & Lime, Flamin' Hot |
  • B Tier: Salt & Pepper, Paprika, Jalapeño, Dill Pickle, Roast Chicken, Spicy Crayfish, Kimchi |
  • C Tier: Ketchup, Seaweed, Truffle |
  • D Tier: Prawn Cocktail, Cucumber |

How I judged each flavor: Would I finish the bag? Would I buy it again? Does it still taste good at the bottom of the bag? A flavor that's exciting for three chips but exhausting by chip twenty doesn't get a high rank from me.

S Tier: The Flavors I Never Regret

These four are the "I can eat the whole bag and still want another" group.

Classic Salted: The benchmark. When the chip is crispy and properly salted, you actually taste the potato. Every other flavor is measured against this one, and it rarely loses.

Salt & Vinegar: That sharp, mouth-puckering tang is addictive. It cuts through the oil, wakes you up, and makes you reach for the next chip immediately. It's also one of the most talked-about flavors online, and for good reason.

Sour Cream & Onion: Creamy, savory, a little herby. It feels like a dip and a chip in one. It's the flavor I'd bring to any party and the first bowl to empty.

Cheddar & Sour Cream: Rich, cheesy, and tangy without being heavy. It's comfort food in chip form, and the sour cream keeps it from getting boring.

A Tier: Reliable and Really Good

Not quite perfect, but I'm happy every time one of these shows up.

  • Barbecue: Smoky, sweet, salty. It's a crowd-pleaser, and with the new wave of BBQ-inspired limited editions, it's having a moment.
  • Cheese & Onion: The British classic. Simple, savory, and perfect with a sandwich or a drink.
  • Salted Egg Yolk: Rich, buttery, and weirdly addictive. It loses a bit of points because it gets heavy fast, but the first handful is incredible.
  • Honey Butter: Sweet and salty in perfect balance. It's the flavor that made "swicy and sweet" snacks a real category.
  • Wasabi: That quick nose-clearing kick is fun and surprisingly refreshing. Not for everyday snacking, but great when you want something different.
  • Chili & Lime: Zesty, bright, and a little spicy. It's the best summer chip flavor, hands down.
  • Flamin' Hot: If you love heat, this might even be S tier for you. It's bold, addictive, and leaves your fingers red for hours. Worth it.

B Tier: Good, But Not Always the Answer

These are fine, sometimes great, but I don't reach for them first.

  • Salt & Pepper: Safe and simple, but a little plain.
  • Paprika: Mild, sweet, and warm. Pleasant, though not memorable.
  • Jalapeño: Gives you the heat but sometimes tastes thin.
  • Dill Pickle: Love-it-or-hate-it. If you're a pickle person, you'll bump this up. I enjoy it in small doses.
  • Roast Chicken: Savory and familiar, but lacks surprise.
  • Spicy Crayfish: Numbing, spicy, and full of character. It's fun, just not something I want a whole bag of.
  • Kimchi: Tangy, spicy, and fermented. Great if you're a kimchi fan, polarizing if not.

C Tier: Only When I'm Feeling Curious

  • Ketchup: Tastes more like a dipping sauce than a real chip flavor. It's fine, but I always end up wanting something else.
  • Seaweed: Works better on thin, crispy seaweed snacks than on a potato chip. The pairing feels a bit off.
  • Truffle: Sounds fancy, but the aroma often feels artificial. When it's good, it's good. When it's not, it's very not.

D Tier: I'll Pass

  • Prawn Cocktail: The pink seafood-sauce flavor is a long-standing British favorite, and I respect that. But for me it's confusing: sweet, tangy, and fishy all at once.
  • Cucumber: Fresh cucumber is great. Cucumber chips? The contrast is just too strange for me.

Two Questions I Keep Getting Asked

Why isn't Flamin' Hot in S Tier? Isn't it the most popular flavor right now?

Because S tier, for me, means a flavor that works for almost everyone and almost every time. Flamin' Hot is thrilling, but it's also a flavor that stops being fun if you're not in the mood for heat. It's an A tier flavor with an S tier fan base. If you love spice, move it up. That's exactly what the template is for.

Are "weird" flavors actually worth trying?

Yes, but go in with the right expectations. Wild flavors like Wasabi, Kimchi, Salted Egg Yolk and Spicy Crayfish rarely beat the classics in the long run, but they're brilliant for a tasting night. Try one, rate it honestly, and keep the ones that surprise you. That's how Honey Butter and Chili & Lime earned their A tier spots.

Build Your Own Chip Flavor Tier List

I built this template because I wanted to settle debates with friends. Now you can use it too:

  1. Open the Chip Flavor Tier List .
  2. Drag all 23 flavors into S, A, B, C and D.
  3. Compare your list with mine and share it.

If your ranking is wildly different (Prawn Cocktail in S tier? I'm listening), drop it in the comments. I genuinely want to know.

FAQ: Best Chip Flavors

What is the best potato chip flavor overall?

In my ranking, Classic Salted, Salt & Vinegar, Sour Cream & Onion and Cheddar & Sour Cream share the top spot. They're the most consistent and the least likely to disappoint.

What is the most popular chip flavor?

Popularity depends on where you live. Classic Salted, Barbecue and Sour Cream & Onion are common favorites in many places, while Salt & Vinegar and Cheese & Onion are especially loved in the UK, and spicy flavors keep growing among younger snackers.

Which chip flavors are the spiciest?

Flamin' Hot is the clear heat leader here, followed by Spicy Crayfish, Jalapeño and Kimchi. Wasabi has a sharp, fast kick, but it's a different kind of heat that fades quickly.

Which chip flavors are the most divisive?

Dill Pickle, Prawn Cocktail, Kimchi and Truffle. People either love them or can't stand them, which makes them perfect for debates.

What are the best chip flavors for a party?

Go with a mix: one or two S tier classics (Salted, Sour Cream & Onion), a smoky option like Barbecue, something with a kick like Flamin' Hot or Chili & Lime, and one adventurous flavor like Honey Butter or Salted Egg Yolk for conversation.

Are limited-edition chip flavors worth buying?

Sometimes. Limited flavors are a cheap way to try something new, and a few have turned into permanent favorites. If you're curious, grab a bag, rate it, and add it to your tier list.

Can I make my own chip flavor tier list?

Absolutely. Use the chip flavor tier list template , rank all 23 flavors, and share it with friends. It takes about five minutes and usually starts a very passionate argument.

Final Thoughts

The best chip flavor isn't the one with the fanciest name or the most viral video. It's the one you keep reaching for when nobody's watching. For me, that's still a simple, perfectly salted chip, with a tangy Salt & Vinegar bag close behind.

Now it's your turn. Which flavor would you put in S tier, and which one deserves D? Build your list, share it, and let's see how wrong I am.
