Where My Lanterns Character Tier List Stands After Episode 5

So after catching up on every episode so far, I sat down and ranked the whole Lanterns cast from S to D based on who's actually working for me — the writing, the performance, the costuming, all of it. This is a personal ranking, not a scorecard of "power levels," so don't expect Sinestro to automatically land at the top just because he's the scariest name in the room.

My Full Lanterns Tier List Overview

Here's the rundown before I get into the details:

  • S: John Stewart
  • A: Hal Jordan, Sheriff Kerry Kane, Guy Gardner, Sinestro
  • B: William Macon, Zoe Macon, Lianna
  • C: Billy Macon, Bernadette Stewart, John Stewart Sr.
  • D: "Waylon Sanders," Antaan

S Tier: The One Character Carrying the Show

John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) — I'll be honest, I went back and forth on putting anyone else here, but nobody in this cast is doing more with less than Aaron Pierre. The show leans into a detail comic fans will appreciate — John is reportedly the first Green Lantern in Corps history recruited directly by the Guardians rather than chosen by the ring itself, which gives his entire arc a chip-on-the-shoulder energy that Pierre plays beautifully. He's stoic without being flat, and the flashback scenes where he's still finding his footing under Hal hit differently once you know where the present-day story is headed. The ring effects and uniform work on him in action scenes are genuinely some of the best superhero costuming I've seen on TV.

A Tier: Consistently Great, Just Behind the Lead

Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) — Chandler plays Hal as a guy who's clearly tired in a way that feels earned rather than written-in. The "veteran cop about to retire" energy could've been a cliché, but the show uses it to build real tension around whether Hal is actually as steady as he looks.

Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) — Macdonald's small-town sheriff is doing a lot of the emotional heavy lifting. Her scenes with Hal have real chemistry, and she never feels like a "love interest" role for its own sake — she has her own stakes in Rushville that matter to the mystery.

Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) — Every scene he's in gets an instant energy boost. Fillion clearly knows exactly what kind of character Guy Gardner is supposed to be, and the former-gym-teacher backstory detail is a fun, grounded touch that fits the show's whole "these are just people" tone.

Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) — Even locked up in a space prison for most of the season so far, Thomsen makes Sinestro feel like a threat that's still shaping the plot from a distance. The fallen-mentor backstory with Hal gives every flashback extra weight.

B Tier: Solid, With Room to Grow

William Macon (Garret Dillahunt) — The "charming modern cowboy who's secretly obsessed with conspiracy theories" is a genuinely fun character type, and Dillahunt sells the surface charm well. I just want the show to dig further into what's actually driving him.

Zoe Macon (Poorna Jagannathan) — Sharp, composed, and clearly playing a longer game than anyone else in the Macon family. Her dynamic with John is one of the more interesting present-day threads, even if it's still early days for that storyline.

Lianna (Laura Linney) — Getting Laura Linney as a Guardian is a genuinely great casting choice, and the character has been getting more screen time as the cosmic side of the story kicks in. Right now she's mostly setup, which is the only reason she's not higher.

C Tier: I Like Them, But They Need More

Billy Macon (Jason Ritter) — The "lawyer son who does whatever his father tells him" archetype is a little familiar, but Ritter brings a nervous energy to it that makes Billy feel more pathetic-in-a-sympathetic-way than outright villainous.

Bernadette Stewart (young: Jasmine Cephas Jones / older: Nicole Ari Parker) — Both actresses are doing good work in limited screen time. I want more of John's family history before I can rank this higher.

John Stewart Sr. (young: J. Alphonse Nicholson / older: Sherman Augustus) — Similar situation — the military-background family history is clearly going to matter to John's arc, but we haven't spent enough time with him yet for it to land emotionally.

D Tier: Not Bad, Just Underused So Far

"Waylon Sanders" (Chris Coy) — A fun one-episode disguise reveal, but it's a guest spot, not a character I can really rank higher with what we've seen.

Antaan (Paul Ben-Victor) — The alien-leader-seeking-revenge setup is intriguing, and there's been plenty of fan speculation online about who he might connect to in the wider DC mythology, but nothing about that has actually been confirmed on-screen yet, so I'm ranking him purely on what's aired so far — which isn't much.

Why the Manhunter Reveal Has Everyone Talking Right Now

The biggest reason this tier list needed an update this week is "Lights Out." The Manhunter identity reveal in the last couple of episodes has completely shifted how fans are reading earlier scenes, and it's the kind of twist that makes you want to go back and rewatch the premiere with new eyes. It's also reframed a couple of characters I had ranked lower — I could see some of these placements shifting again by the finale on October 4.

The Rushville Mystery Is Turning Into the Real Draw

What's interesting is how much of the online conversation isn't even about the ring-slinging cosmic stuff — it's about the Nebraska ranch conspiracy and how it ties back to Hal and John's present-day investigation. For a DC show, Lanterns is pulling in a genuinely different crowd than the usual superhero audience, and that's part of why the character debates have gotten so heated across fan forums this season.

Once I had my full ranking sorted out, I wanted a cleaner way to actually share it instead of just a list in a group chat. I ended up using TierMakerPro's Lanterns tier list template to drag everyone into place and export it as a PNG — it's free, works right in the browser with no account needed, and you can swap in your own character images or rename the tiers if you want a different setup than mine. Honestly took me like five minutes to make and export.

So — where would you put John Stewart, Sinestro, or Guy Gardner? Grab the Lanterns tier list template and build your own version, then drop your ranking in the comments. I'm curious how differently everyone's reading this cast so far.

FAQ

How many main characters does Lanterns have so far? Season 1 has introduced around 13 named characters across the main cast — including Hal Jordan, John Stewart, the Corps members, and the Rushville, Nebraska locals tied to the murder investigation — with more likely to appear before the October 4 finale.

Who's the better Green Lantern, Hal Jordan or John Stewart? It really depends what you're looking for. Hal brings the seasoned, world-weary veteran energy, while John's arc as the first Guardian-recruited Lantern in Corps history gives him a more layered, chip-on-the-shoulder journey. My personal ranking has John slightly ahead, but it's genuinely close.

Is the tier list maker free to use, and do I need an account? Yes — TierMakerPro's templates are free and don't require signing up. You can open the Lanterns template, drag characters into whatever tiers you want, rename or recolor the tier labels, upload your own images, and export the finished ranking as a PNG to share.

Does the show confirm who Antaan is connected to? Not as of the episodes aired so far. There's active fan speculation online, but nothing about Antaan's broader connections has been confirmed on-screen, so it's worth treating any of those theories as unconfirmed for now.
