I made this as a template — a starting point. If you disagree with where I put the Piglin Brute or think the Witch deserves higher, steal this format and make your own. That's half the fun of tier lists.
Here's the quick overview before we get into the "why":
- S Tier: Creeper, Enderman, Ender Dragon, Warden, Wither
- A Tier: Zombie, Skeleton, Blaze, Ghast, Shulker, Evoker
- B Tier: Witch, Drowned, Piglin Brute, Hoglin, Guardian, Phantom
- C Tier: Vindicator, Magma Cube, Slime, Cave Spider, Husk
- D Tier: Silverfish, Zombified Piglin
Now let's get into the actual reasoning, mob by mob.
S Tier — The Mobs That Define Minecraft
Creeper — There's a reason this is the mascot of the entire game. No health bar, no screech, just silent death walking toward your base. Even after a decade of players knowing the hiss means "run," it still gets you.
Enderman — Tall, silent, and will absolutely ruin your day if you make eye contact in the wrong biome. The teleportation mechanic alone makes it one of the most unpredictable mobs in the game.
Ender Dragon — The original final boss. Nothing else in the base game comes close to the scale of this fight — the arena, the crystals, the phases.
Warden — Blind, built like a tank, and hits so hard it can two-shot a fully enchanted player. The Deep Dark made sneaking a core survival skill again.
Wither — The only mob you have to summon yourself, and it punishes you immediately for doing so. The closest thing to a raid boss Minecraft has.
A Tier — Essential, Dangerous, Unforgettable
Zombie — The baseline enemy of the entire genre. Not flashy, but every single player has a Zombie story.
Skeleton — Ranged, accurate, and genuinely annoying in caves and ravines.
Blaze — Guards the Nether Fortress and gates your progress toward Ender Pearls and Brewing.
Ghast — That scream still lives in everyone's head rent-free. Ranged fireballs can one-shot you off a bridge.
Shulker — Levitation is one of the cruelest status effects in the game, and End Cities make it worse.
Evoker — Summons Vexes, casts Fangs, and drops the Totem of Undying. Genuinely requires strategy.
B Tier — Strong but Situational
Witch — Throws potions at you, drinks potions to survive, and is honestly underrated.
Drowned — Ocean Zombie with a Trident. Deadly in groups, manageable alone.
Piglin Brute — Doesn't care about gold armor and hits hard, but limited to Bastion Remnants.
Hoglin — Aggressive and strong, but predictable and easy to kite.
Guardian — Mining Fatigue plus laser damage makes Ocean Monuments a grind, but a learnable one.
Phantom — Only appears if you skip sleep — more of a punishment mechanic than a true threat.
C Tier — Common but Manageable
Vindicator — Hits hard with an axe, but easy to outmaneuver.
Magma Cube — Nether Slime, mostly just annoying.
Slime — Classic, low threat, good XP farm material.
Cave Spider — Poisonous and fast, but tiny hitboxes make them easy once you expect them.
Husk — Desert Zombie with Hunger on hit, otherwise identical to a regular Zombie.
D Tier — Barely a Threat
Silverfish — More annoying than dangerous, mostly famous for infesting Strongholds.
Zombified Piglin — Passive unless provoked, one of the most forgiving mobs in the Nether.
Two Questions I Keep Getting Asked
Is the Warden actually stronger than the Ender Dragon?
In raw damage-per-hit, yes — the Warden can deal devastating melee damage in a single swing. But the Ender Dragon wins on fight complexity and arena mechanics. That's why both sit in S Tier for completely different reasons.
Why is the Creeper S-Tier if it has such low HP?
Because Creepers aren't ranked on stats, they're ranked on impact. A mob with 20 HP that can delete your entire build in one hiss has a psychological effect that mobs with way more health simply don't have.
FAQ
Does this tier list include the new Frostbite Zombie from the Ice Caves update?
Not yet — it's still in snapshot/preview testing. Once it ships, expect it around A or B Tier depending on how the Ice Ball mechanic gets balanced.
Will this list change with future updates?
Almost certainly. With The Sift dimension confirmed and more creatures coming with it, this is a snapshot of the game today, not a permanent ruling.
What's the best mob for a beginner to practice fighting?
Zombies and Skeletons. They're common, predictable, and teach core combat skills before you ever deal with something like a Warden.
Is this list for Java or Bedrock Edition?
Both. Mob behavior is close enough between editions that the rankings hold up either way.
Can I make my own version of this tier list?
Please do. That's the whole point of posting the template — drop your own tiers in the comments and tell me why I'm wrong about the Witch.
