Meet every option in Plants vs. Zombies Ranking

Rank these 39 original Plants vs. Zombies plants by the tradeoffs that matter in an actual lawn: sun cost, recharge, damage or stall, setup difficulty, board space, and whether the plant only shines at night, in the pool, on the roof, or in fog. The notes use original-game values and recurring player arguments, so a cheap specialist is judged in its intended matchup rather than against every all-purpose attacker.

  1. Blover

For 100 sun and a fast recharge, Blover instantly removes every Balloon Zombie and temporarily clears fog, then disappears. It is one of the easiest and cleanest counters in those waves, but without balloons or fog it contributes no damage, defense, or lasting board value.

  2. Cabbage-pult

Cabbage-pult costs 100 sun, recharges fast, and lobs 40-damage cabbages about every three seconds, giving roughly Peashooter-level sustained damage over obstacles and roof slopes. It is simple and dependable on the roof, but has no control or splash and is usually a bridge to Kernel-pult or Melon-pult rather than a late-board carry.

    Official source
  3. Cactus

Cactus is a 125-sun, fast-recharge shooter with ordinary 20-damage spikes; it stretches upward when a Balloon Zombie enters its lane and can pop it without a consumable. The dual ground-and-air role is easy to use, but its normal damage is only Peashooter-grade, so many players prefer Blover when several balloons arrive together.

    Official source
  4. Chomper

Chomper costs 150 sun and swallows one reachable zombie outright, but then spends about 42 seconds chewing and cannot attack. The instant removal can be excellent in protected lanes or speedrun routes, yet its short reach and huge downtime make careless placement punishing and explain why community rankings swing from strong niche pick to weak general defense.

    Official source
  5. Coffee Bean

Coffee Bean spends 75 sun to wake a sleeping mushroom in roughly one second during day or roof stages, then leaves the tile free. It is mechanically simple and unlocks powerful daytime Ice-shroom, Doom-shroom, or Magnet-shroom plays, but the bean raises the real cost of every mushroom and uses an extra seed slot.

    Official source
  6. Doom-shroom

Doom-shroom costs 125 sun, has a very slow 50-second recharge, and wipes out nearly everything in a huge blast; daytime use also needs Coffee Bean. Players rate its emergency power highly, but the explosion leaves a crater that blocks planting for a long time, so good timing and a disposable tile matter as much as raw damage.

    Official source
  7. Flower Pot

Flower Pot costs 25 sun, recharges fast, and is the required base for almost every plant on roof tiles. It has no attack and only 300 health, so roof setups effectively pay an extra 25 sun and expose a fragile foundation; easy to use, but its tier value is pure access rather than combat strength.

    Official source
  8. Fume-shroom

Fume-shroom is a fast-recharge 75-sun night attacker whose fumes pierce every target in their short lane segment and ignore Screen Door shields. Its cheap multi-target damage is excellent when zombies bunch up, but the limited reach forces a forward, protected position and daytime use raises the price with Coffee Bean.

    Official source
  9. Garlic

Garlic costs only 50 sun and redirects a biting zombie into an adjacent lane, enabling compact lane funnels with Spikeweed, Fume-shroom, or other area damage. It takes planning rather than quick reactions: 400 health is poor for a wall, repeated bites wear it down, and a bad edge-lane placement may send threats where the defense is weaker.

    Official source
  10. Grave Buster

Grave Buster costs 75 sun, recharges fast, and spends about 4.5 seconds eating one grave before disappearing. Removing a spawn point and reclaiming its tile is valuable on crowded night lawns, but the plant is vulnerable during the animation and has literally no purpose on stages without graves.

    Official source
  11. Hypno-shroom

Hypno-shroom costs 75 sun with a slow recharge and converts the one compatible zombie that eats it into a fighter moving the opposite way. Baiting a tough Football or similar target can return far more than the price, but weak zombies waste the effect, several heavy machines are immune, and daytime activation needs Coffee Bean.

    Official source
  12. Ice-shroom

Ice-shroom spends 75 sun on a screen-wide freeze and chill, buying every lane time at once; its recharge is a very slow 50 seconds and daytime use needs Coffee Bean. The input is simple, but high-level value comes from holding it for a flag wave or saving a collapsing lane instead of freezing a nearly empty board.

    Official source
  13. Jalapeno

Jalapeno costs 125 sun and, after a brief fuse, burns every zombie in one lane while also clearing Zomboni ice; its recharge is a very slow 50 seconds. It is easier to aim than an area bomb and excellent for a single-lane emergency, but contributes nothing to the other four lanes and punishes an early, low-value use.

    Official source
  14. Kernel-pult

Kernel-pult costs 100 sun and recharges fast, throwing mostly 20-damage kernels with an occasional 40-damage butter pat that briefly stuns its target. The same price as Cabbage-pult buys useful control and roof compatibility, but the butter is random and its raw damage is lower, so it feels brilliant or inconsistent depending on the wave.

    Official source
  15. Wall-nut

Wall-nut turns 50 sun into 4,000 health, enough to stall ordinary biters for a long time while shooters work; its recharge is a slower 30 seconds. It is the easiest early wall to understand and highly sun-efficient, but vaulting enemies can bypass it and the long recharge makes replacing several damaged lanes difficult.

    Official source
  16. Lily Pad

Lily Pad costs 25 sun, recharges fast, and supplies the planting base needed by non-aquatic plants in pool lanes. It is easy and indispensable for a conventional pool defense, but adds no offense and makes each water placement cost 25 more; an exposed pad can also be eaten before the setup is completed.

    Official source
  17. Magnet-shroom

Magnet-shroom costs 100 sun and, about every 15 seconds, strips a nearby metal item such as a Buckethead helmet, Screen Door, ladder, pogo stick, or Football gear. That can erase huge effective health and disable troublesome abilities, but it deals no direct damage, is matchup-dependent, and needs another 75-sun Coffee Bean by day.

    Official source
  18. Marigold

Marigold costs 50 sun, recharges slowly, and drops coins roughly every 24 seconds instead of producing sun or fighting zombies. It is straightforward and useful for farming money in safe or dedicated setups, but in a hard survival lane it consumes a seed slot and board tile while doing nothing to keep that lane alive.

    Official source
  19. Melon-pult

Melon-pult is a 300-sun, fast-recharge lobber whose 80-damage melons also splash nearby zombies, making it the strongest sustained crowd damage among these non-upgrade plants. It works naturally on roofs and scales into dense waves, but its high price delays the first copy and overbuilding it can leave the economy or front line underfunded.

    Official source
  20. Peashooter

Peashooter costs 100 sun, recharges fast, and fires a 20-damage pea about every 1.4 seconds down its full lane. No setup knowledge is required and the damage is perfectly predictable, making it the baseline for judging price and accuracy; later waves expose its lack of splash, control, and special counters.

    Official source
  21. Plantern

Plantern costs 25 sun and permanently reveals the fog around its position while it survives, unlike Blover’s temporary screen clear. That makes route reading effortless in fog stages, but it recharges slowly, has only 300 health, needs protection, and offers no combat value anywhere fog is absent.

    Official source
  22. Potato Mine

Potato Mine costs just 25 sun and deals 1,800 contact damage after roughly 15 seconds of arming, enough to remove most early individual threats. Planning the first zombie’s travel time lets it buy an extremely cheap economy window, but it is not an instant panic button and an unarmed or poorly spaced mine is easily lost.

    Official source
  23. Puff-shroom

Puff-shroom costs 0 sun, recharges fast, and fires normal 20-damage spores, but only across a short three-tile reach. Free mass planting makes it a community favorite for night openings and disposable stalling; once lanes lengthen or daytime requires Coffee Bean, the range and low scaling stop it from replacing real back-line damage.

    Official source
  24. Pumpkin

Pumpkin costs 125 sun and wraps 4,000 extra health around a plant without consuming another lane position, even on a Lily Pad or Flower Pot. This compact protection is powerful and easy to understand, especially for exposed utility plants, but its 30-second recharge and price make full-board coverage slow and expensive to repair.

    Official source
  25. Repeater

Repeater costs 200 sun, recharges fast, and fires two 20-damage peas per volley, exactly doubling Peashooter’s lane damage for double the price in one compact tile. It is accurate, easy, and scales strongly through Torchwood, but brings no slow or splash by itself and can strain the early economy if planted before sun production is ready.

    Official source
  26. Scaredy-shroom

Scaredy-shroom is a fast-recharge 25-sun night shooter with full-lane, Peashooter-level damage, an exceptional bargain while enemies stay away. If a zombie gets close it hides and stops firing, so back-row placement and a real front line are mandatory; by day the 75-sun Coffee Bean erases most of its price advantage.

    Official source
  27. Sea-shroom

Sea-shroom is a 0-sun aquatic Puff-shroom with the same 20-damage shot and short reach, usable naturally in night pool lanes. Free defense sounds ideal, but its recharge is a slow 30 seconds, so it cannot cover both water lanes quickly; daytime Coffee Bean and the limited range further narrow its practical role.

    Official source
  28. Snow Pea

Snow Pea costs 175 sun and fires the same 20-damage, full-lane shot as Peashooter while slowing the target’s movement and eating speed. The control is accurate, automatic, and beginner-friendly, but it costs 75 more for no direct damage gain, multiple slows do not compound well, and Torchwood removes the icy benefit.

    Official source
  29. Spikeweed

Spikeweed costs 100 sun, recharges fast, and deals 20 damage every second to every walker standing on its tile; ordinary zombies cannot stop to eat it. Dense traffic makes that damage scale well, and it can sacrifice itself to pop a Zomboni or Catapult tire, but it cannot be placed on roof or water bases and heavy smashes still remove it.

    Official source
  30. Split Pea

Split Pea costs 125 sun and shoots one 20-damage pea forward but two backward, specifically covering Digger Zombies that surface behind the defense. Against normal front pressure it is barely more useful than Peashooter despite the higher price, so players often rank it low outside its counter matchup; correct column placement is the whole skill test.

    Official source
  31. Squash

Squash costs 50 sun, recharges in about 30 seconds, and leaps onto the first nearby threat for 1,800 damage, often catching a tightly packed neighbor too. It is a cheap, beginner-friendly emergency removal with little setup, but the targeting delay can choose the wrong lead zombie and every use consumes the plant.

    Official source
  32. Starfruit

Starfruit costs 125 sun and fires 20-damage stars in five fixed directions, letting one tile cover several lanes when board geometry lines up. Its ceiling is high in layered or compact formations, but many stars miss useful targets after a poor placement; that unusual aiming requirement is why community lists often disagree sharply about it.

    Official source
  33. Sunflower

Sunflower costs 50 sun, recharges fast, and produces 25 sun roughly every 24 seconds, paying back its purchase after two drops. It is the simple backbone of most daytime economies and more copies accelerate expensive defenses, but every flower is a fragile non-attacker and overplanting before basic safety can lose a lane.

    Official source
  34. Sun-shroom

Sun-shroom costs 25 sun and initially produces small 15-sun drops before maturing to normal 25-sun production after about two minutes. That low entry price makes night openings safer and more flexible than Sunflower, but early income is slower and a short stage may end before much of the maturation advantage is realized.

    Official source
  35. Tall-nut

Tall-nut costs 125 sun, recharges in about 30 seconds, and provides 8,000 health while blocking vaulting and jumping enemies that clear a normal Wall-nut. It is a very reliable, beginner-friendly anchor for critical lanes, but costs two and a half Wall-nuts and still needs damage support rather than solving a wave alone.

    Official source
  36. Tangle Kelp

Tangle Kelp costs 25 sun and drags one nearby pool-lane zombie underwater, then disappears; its recharge is a slower 30 seconds. The instant single-target removal is cheap and easy against a dangerous swimmer, but it works only in water, handles just one target per charge, and cannot build the sustained coverage of a full defense.

    Official source
  37. Threepeater

Threepeater costs 325 sun and fires one 20-damage pea into its own lane plus the lane above and below, for strong total output only when all three have targets. One placement is mechanically easy and covers wide pressure, but it is expensive, wastes shots on quiet lanes, and is poor at concentrating damage into a single emergency lane.

    Official source
  38. Torchwood

Torchwood costs 175 sun and doubles ordinary peas that pass through it into 40-damage fireballs with a little splash, multiplying the value of Repeater or Threepeater columns. The setup has a high damage ceiling but consumes a tile and pays nothing without enough pea traffic; it also removes Snow Pea’s slowing identity instead of combining both effects.

    Official source
  39. Umbrella Leaf

Umbrella Leaf costs 100 sun and protects the surrounding 3×3 block from Bungee theft and Catapult basketballs. It is simple once the coverage footprint is planned and can be indispensable on the relevant roof waves, but it deals no damage, protects nothing outside that square, and is nearly a dead seed choice when those enemies are absent.
